This alloy provides increased resistance relative to 316L in highly corrosive environments with sulfur-containing media, chlorides and other halides. 317/317L is commonly used to treat sulphur, pulp liquor, acid dyes, acetylated and nitrated mixtures, bleaching solutions, heavy coals and oils and many compounds. This added molybdenum greatly increases the steel’s resistance to chloride pitting, which is why 316 SS is often used in chemical processing and the marine industry.
