The alloying element that makes steel ¡®stainless¡¯ is chromium; however it is the addition of nickel that enables stainless steel to become such a versatile alloy.

304l pipe has good oxidation resistance in intermittent duty up to 870¡ãC and continuous duty up to 925¡ãC. However, continuous use at 425-860¡ãC is not recommended. In this case, 304L is recommended because of its resistance to carbide precipitation. Where high strength is required at temperatures above 500¡ãC and up to 800¡ãC, Grade 304H is recommended. This material will remain resistant to water corrosion.

For paper mill applications requiring lower alloy grades that do not have sufficient corrosion resistance. Based on a 22% chromium content, they have a combined austenitic:ferritic microstructure that provides greater strength, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness.

The UNS S31803 (ASTM F51) specification has been largely superseded by UNS S32205 (1.4462, ASTM F60). This reflects their desire to maximize the alloy’s corrosion properties, thanks to the development of the AOD steelmaking process, which allows for tighter control of composition. In addition, it allows to influence the nitrogen addition level rather than just being present as a background element. Therefore, the highest performing duplex grades seek to maximize the content of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N).

Stainless Steel 347H Flanges (UNS S3409) stainless steel plate is the higher carbon (0.04 ¨C 0.10) version of the alloy. It was developed for enhanced creep resistance and for higher strength at temperatures above 1000¡ãF (537¡ãC). In most instances, the carbon content of the plate enables dual certification.

The high chromium and moderate nickel content of 310S stainless steel allow these steels to be used in H2S-containing reduced sulfur atmospheres. They are widely used in moderate carburizing atmospheres, such as those encountered in petrochemical environments. For more severe carburizing atmospheres, other heat-resistant alloys should be selected. Grade 310 is not recommended for frequent liquid quenching due to thermal shock. Steel flanges provide an easy access for cleaning, inspection or modification. They usually come in round shapes but they can also come in square and rectangular forms. 304 is chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel. Better corrosion resistance than Type 302. High ductility, excellent drawing, forming and spinning properties. Inherently non-magnetic, it becomes slightly magnetic when cold worked. Low carbon content means less precipitation of carbides in the heat affected zone during welding and less susceptibility to intergranular corrosion.

316 pipe bend is primarily used in construction and infrastructure because it is strong, resistant to pitting, and corrosion resistant in most circumstances.
