Type 316 stainless steel shows no evidence of corrosion in the 100-hour, 5% salt spray (ASTM-B-117) test.

Annealing is a heat treatment process mainly used to increase the ductility and reduce the hardness of the material. This change in hardness and ductility is the result of the reduction of dislocations in the crystal structure of the annealed material. Annealing is usually done after the material has undergone a hardening or cold working process to prevent its brittle failure or to make it easier to handle later.

Alloy 304/304L resists atmospheric corrosion, as well as, moderately oxidizing and reducing environments. The alloy has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition.

254 SMO is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing media or seawater applications. The 254 SMO is characterised by its high chromium content, this is further complemented by its molybdenum and nitrogen content which gives 254 SMO excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Since these oil storage tanks are located in the Arabian Gulf (saline conditions) the use of this material was an optimal solution for the environment.
