The difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel is that 316L has a maximum carbon content of 0.03 and is suitable for welding, while 316 has a moderate carbon content. Type 316/316L is a chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel containing molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum improves corrosion resistance compared to 304/304L in halide environments and in reducing acids such as sulfuric and phosphoric acid.
