Duplex stainless steels are called “duplex” because they have a two-phase microstructure consisting of grains of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel. The picture shows the yellow austenitic phase as “islands” surrounded by the blue ferritic phase. When duplex stainless steel is melted it solidifies from the liquid phase to a completely ferritic structure. As the material cools to room temperature, about half of the ferritic grains transform to austenitic grains (“islands”). The result is a microstructure of roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.

 

ASTM A790 UNS S32205 is a duplex steel type that is a mixture of different elements. There are chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen in the composition of SA 790 UNS S32205 steel material. The composition calls for corrosion resistance and strength in the mid-range among the other duplex steel types. Therefore the UNS S32205 pipe has a medium range of mechanical properties. There are three different categories of duplex steel material. They are the duplex, super duplex and the lean duplex. The categories differ based on the chromium addition and the PREN numbers. The PREN number is an indication of pitting corrosion resistance. The Duplex S32205 Seamless Pipe belongs to the ordinary duplex steel. UNS S32205 pipe is cost effective compared to the other two types and is therefore the most used duplex steel type.

 

The ASTM A790 UNS S32205 Welded Pipe gets additional strength through the making procedure. The welded ones are hot rolled while the seamless pipes are cold drawn. They can both be strengthened further but to a limited extent with cold working. The SA 790 UNS S32205 Tube is used in application that performs under mildly high temperatures, pressures and mildly corrosive environments.
