Carbon Steel Flanges

The properties of high carbon steel flanges include high hardness, high strength, wear resistance, and moderate ductility. Carbon steels come in different sizes and strengths. The tensile strength is in the range of 485 MPa minimum tensile strength and 250 MPa minimum yield strength. Flanges ANSI B16.5 Class 150 is the medium pressure rating for B16.5 standard flanges.

As the carbon content increases, the steel becomes harder and harder after heat treatment. Instead, its ductility is reduced. Higher carbon reduces weldability if not heat treated.

Carbon steel flanges are made of different types of carbon steel. They come in different grades and different material compositions. They all have high wear and high toughness. Carbon Steel Pipe Flanges are available in ASTM A105, A350 LF2, A694 F2, F46 and many others. Flange sizes vary from ANSI B16.5, 16.47 series A and B and other international standards according to ASTM, ASME, ANSI and DIN.

Carbon steels may include alloy steels without being used as stainless steels. Carbon steel pipe flanges are usually made of low carbon steel or low carbon steel, because it has low carbon content, high strength and good toughness, but it is not easy to temper. It can be used in many applications with lower cost and materials.

Depending on the size, flanges range from ?” to 48″ and pressure ratings range from 150 to 2500. Low temperature carbon steel flanges are used in low temperature applications plants and general corrosive services in the oil and gas, oil, water, power and other industries.

ASTM A105 steel grade is the typical common material for forged carbon steel flanges (low carbon steel), which is used in many places in pressure systems for environmental and high temperature service. This material is durable, low cost and not easy to break. If used in stainless steel piping systems, lap end rings should be used.

Carbon steel flange is a kind of rim formed at the end of the pipe when it is fixed on the pipe. It is used to seal the ends of pipes, valves or other connections. It has high tensile strength and is available with convex surfaces and supports for easy installation. It is an iron-carbon alloy containing up to 2.1 wt.% carbon. Carbon steel does not have minimum specified levels of other alloying elements, but it usually contains manganese.
