Nickel-based alloy pipe bends provide high corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength but these alloys possess poor machinability. Hastelloy-X is a nickel based alloy that has been used for high temperature use. Hastelloy X is selected for the production of lower cross ducts that connect the exit of the reactor core to the steam generators. Similarly, the upper cross ducts that return the helium to the core are also produced of Hastelloy X. The Hastelloy X chemical composition has carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, iron, titanium, aluminum, cobalt, boron, copper and tungsten in it.
