Alloy steel is steel that is alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steels are broken down into two groups: low alloy steels and high alloy steels. The difference between the two is disputed. Smith and Hashemi define the difference at 4.0%, while Degarmo, et al., define it at 8.0%.[1][2] Most commonly, the phrase “alloy steel” refers to low-alloy steels.

A182 F5 grade slip flanges are known for their low material cost and ease of installation. One of the added benefits of these flanges is that they can also be used as lap flanges if dealing with Type B or C ends.

Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel has strong crack resistance under high temperature and high pressure. Chromium molybdenum is also resistant to hydrogen attack and hot sulfide corrosion cracking.

The specification for standard ASTM A182 F9 Flanges covers both forged or Rolled Alloy Steel Pipe Flanges & Fittings, that have been designed and manufactured for high temperature service. ASTM A182 F9 Flanges have a minimum chromium content of 18% in the alloy. This makes it survive in temperatures up to 870 degrees Celsius.

The alloy content of pipes that make up low alloy steel is less than 5%. High alloy steels, on the other hand, have an alloy content ranging from 5% to about 50%. Similar to most alloys, the working pressure capacity of alloy steel seamless pipe is about 20% higher than that of welded pipe.
