Annealing softening begins at approximately 1600¡ãF (871¡ãC) and is fairly complete after 10 to 15 minutes of heating at 1800¡ãF (982¡ãC). Above this temperature, grain growth can be objectionable, although very brief heating at 1900¡ãF will result in complete softening without excessive grain growth. Since the cooling rate has no effect on softening, the material can be water quenched or air cooled.

The chromium content of this alloy results in superior resistance to oxidizing environments. The high molybdenum content makes alloy 625 very resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion.

Inconel 601 has good resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Due to the control of carbon content and grain size, 601 has high creep rupture strength, so it is recommended to use 601 in the field above 500 ¡ãC.

Although the welding characteristics of Inconel 718, especially its resistance to post-weld cracking tend to be outstanding. Similar to other Inconel alloy grades, Inconel 718 plate forms a binder on its surface when the material is heated, but self-repairs the passivating oxide layer.
