Monel 400 flanges are a nickel-copper alloy (approximately 67% Ni ¨C 23% Cu) resistant to seawater and steam at high temperatures, as well as salt and caustic solutions. Alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold work. This nickel alloy has good corrosion resistance, good weldability and high strength.

Monel 400 has very good mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures, can be used up to 1000¡ãF, and has a melting point of 2370-2460¡ãF. However, Alloy 400 has low strength in the annealed condition, so various tempers can be used to increase the strength.

Socket weld flanges were originally developed for small high pressure pipelines. They have the same static strength as slip-on flanges, but their fatigue strength is 50% higher than double-welded slip-on flanges.

This alloy has high tensile strength, making it a commercially viable option for marine engineering purposes.
