It is important that the material used for any project has the correct mechanical properties for the specific application. Heat treatment processes are often used to alter the mechanical properties of metals, and one of the more common heat treatment processes is normalizing.

For high temperature applications, the high carbon variant 316H stainless steel and the stabilized grade 316Ti stainless steel should be used.

The austenitic structure of 316 stainless steel provides excellent toughness even at low temperatures.

Stainless grade 316Ti contains a small amount of titanium. The titanium content is usually only around 0.5%. Titanium atoms stabilize the structure of 316 at temperatures in excess of 800¡ãC.

While 300 series stainless steels are very popular, they are not universally suitable for all process piping applications. For example, even though they are corrosion resistant, 300 series formulations do not perform well in the presence of chlorides. In these cases, steels with much higher alloy contents such as molybdenum, chromium and nickel are preferred.

Type 316 is much more resistant to sulfuric acid solutions than any other chromium-nickel type. Type 316 is resistant to acid concentrations up to 5% at temperatures up to 120¡ãF (49¡ãC). This type has excellent resistance to higher concentrations at temperatures below 100¡ã F (38¡ã C).

316L stainless steel seamless tubing is used for more dimensionally precise applications. Less carbide precipitation during pipeline welding reduces intergranular corrosion and localized corrosion. Seamless tubes range from ?” to 16″.

The purpose of preparatory heat treatment is to improve processability, eliminate internal stress and prepare a good metallographic structure for final heat treatment. The heat treatment process includes annealing, normalizing, aging, quenching and tempering, etc.

254SMO made of high concentration of molybdenum, chromium and nitrogen has good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper improves corrosion resistance in certain acids. In addition, 254SMO has good stress strength corrosion cracking properties due to its high content of nickel, chromium and molybdenum.

Since 254S MO stainless steel pipe is a high alloy material, the manufacturing process is quite complicated. Generally speaking, people can only rely on traditional processes to manufacture this special stainless steel pipe, such as seamless, casting, forging, rolling, etc.

The high molybdenum content of 254SMO stainless steel makes it have a higher oxidation rate when annealed, resulting in a rougher surface after pickling than ordinary stainless steel. However, this has no adverse effect on the corrosion resistance of the steel.

The carbon content of 254SMO is very low, which means that there is very little danger of carbide precipitation caused by heating.
