Monel K500 2.4375 N05500 pipes with flanges

Reworking of Alloy K-500 is best done while the material is in the annealed or hot worked and quenched condition. However, age hardened materials can be finished to close tolerances and finish. Therefore, the recommended practice is to machine slightly oversize, age harden, and then finish to size.

Nickel alloys are spark resistant and non-magnetic at -200¡ãF. However, during processing, a magnetic layer can be formed on the surface of the material. Aluminum and copper may be selectively oxidized during heating, leaving a magnetic nickel-rich film on the outside. Pickling or bright pickling can remove this magnetic film and restore non-magnetic properties.

This alloy has excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of environments including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and alkalis. It has been found to be resistant to sour gas environments and is listed in NACE MR1075. The combination of extremely low corrosion rates and high strength in high-velocity seawater makes it ideal for marine shafts in stagnant or slow-moving seawater, where scaling and then pitting can occur, but this pitting occurs fairly rapidly will slow down after the initial attack.
