The advantages of duplex steels include: good weldability and machinability, high resistance to corrosion fatigue, resistance to stress corrosion cracking (especially chloride stress corrosion cracking), erosion and high energy absorption.

Duplex stainless steel is designed to combine improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking (including sulfide stress corrosion cracking), pitting, crevice corrosion and high strength when compared with other stainless alloys.

The combination of high strength, corrosion resistance and moderate weldability has many benefits but also bring disadvantages and limitations. In S31803, about half of the ferrite grains transform into austenite grains (“islands”) as the material cools to room temperature. The result is a microstructure of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.
