It is strong and can only be hardened by cold work. Due to its anti-aging properties, Monel 400 is most commonly used in parts in marine and chemical environments. The alloy is very soft at high temperatures, so forging is a relatively simple process. Forging can be performed between 2150?F (1175?C) and 1200?F (650?C), the lower the temperature, the higher the mechanical properties and the smaller the grain size. Monel K-500 is a versatile nickel-copper alloy with good strength and toughness and excellent corrosion resistance. Monel R-405 is a free cut version with similar characteristics.
