254 SMO is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel developed for use in seawater and other corrosive chlorine-containing media. Generally, intergranular corrosion is the result of chromium carbide precipitation on the surface of metals with a higher carbon content and prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Because the alloy used for 317L joints can withstand high temperatures without being corroded by intergranular corrosion, these joints can be used in the as-welded condition.

In the annealed condition, stainless steel 317L fittings are non-magnetic. Although fittings manufactured from Grade 317L cannot be hardened by heat treatment, the material will harden by cold working. 317L fittings can be easily welded and machined by traditional shop fabrication methods. No post weld heat treatment is required for these fittings. Generally, grade 317 stainless steel can be welded using fusion welding and resistance welding methods, but for these 317L stainless steel fittings, oxyacetylene welding is not the preferred method.
