Additionally, Duplex 2205 is the most widely used duplex grade on the market. Duplex 2205 alloy is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel alloy. The effect of nitrogen is to significantly increase the corrosion resistance of the alloy; especially in the as-welded condition.

Duplex 2205 bolts (EN 1.4462 ) are made of austenitic-ferritic stainless steel and are designed to provide higher strength and corrosion resistance than 300 series stainless steels. It helps users avoid stress corrosion cracking common to 316 and 317. Duplex 2205 bolts combine the stress corrosion cracking resistance and high strength of ferritic alloys with austenitic fabrication capabilities.

Duplex 2205 was tested under reverse bending stress at room temperature compared to SS316. The results show that Duplex 2205 has approximately twice the fatigue limit/yield strength.

Duplex 2205 bolts have a ductile to brittle transition at -50¡ãC and also become brittle at 300-1000¡ãC, so a temperature of -50¡ãC to 300¡ãC is recommended. Exposure to above 300¡ãC will not only cause embrittlement of 2205 bolts, but will also reduce corrosion resistance.

The combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen provides Duplex 2205 bolts with good chloride pitting and crevice corrosion protection, which makes them useful in marine environments, brackish water, bleaching operations, closed loop water systems and some food processing applications.
