The ASTM A307 specification covers carbon steel bolts and studs ranging in diameter from 1/4″ to 4″. This is your everyday mill bolt specification, usually made from A36 round bar. Carbon steel is a common material for fasteners due to its good tensile strength and ability to withstand loads. It responds well to heat treatment with minimal work hardening and brittleness.

U-Bolts are easy to machine and can meet the tight tolerances required for thread and fastener configurations. Carbon steel is also an economical metal. Carbon steels are classified by the amount of carbon in the alloy, which affects the properties of the steel. Mild steel with a carbon content of 0.05-0.3% is ductile and ductile. Carbon steel nut and bolt grades are divided into three different categories based on the carbon content of mild, medium and high carbon steels. Mild steel hex bolts are the most widely used category of all carbon steel groups. Mild steel threaded bolt alloys typically contain less than 0.25% carbon by weight. Since this type of carbon steel bolt cannot be hardened by heat treatment to promote the formation of martensite, the alloy is cold worked.

Carbon steel is defined as any steel with a carbon content not exceeding 2.1% by weight. Carbon steel bolts become harder and increase in strength after heat treatment as the carbon content increases. However, the ductility of the steel decreases.

Within this specific category of mild steel is another steel called High Strength Low Alloy Steel, or HSLA for short. Although HSLA screws belong to the mild steel category, it can be noted that HSLA screws also contain other elements in their alloys, such as copper, nickel, vanadium and molybdenum.

Regardless of the heat treatment applied to the carbon steel alloy, the higher carbon content in the material reduces the weldability of carbon steel fasteners, while also effectively reducing the melting point of the bolt. Most carbon steel studs are generally softer.

The combination of all elements of the bolt accounts for 10% of the weight of the steel. As the name suggests, HSLA bolts are heat treated for higher strength. These washers remain ductile, making them easy to form and machine, while exhibiting higher corrosion resistance than ordinary mild steel.

Medium carbon steel bolts, anchor bolts, screws, studs, nuts and self-drilling screws contain between 0.25 – 0.60% carbon and 0.60 – 1.65% manganese by weight. The mechanical properties of these studs are improved by heat treatment.
