Carbon Content: The "L" in AISI 304L stands for "low carbon." AISI 304L stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which is lower than the maximum carbon content of 0.08% in AISI 304. The lower carbon content in AISI 304L helps to minimize the risk of carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone during welding, which can cause intergranular corrosion.
 

Corrosion Resistance: Both AISI 304L and AISI 304 stainless steels exhibit excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments. They are resistant to corrosion from most oxidizing acids, organic acids, and chloride-containing solutions. However, the lower carbon content in AISI 304L provides slightly better resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion in welded structures compared to AISI 304.
 

Weldability: AISI 304L stainless steel is more readily weldable compared to AISI 304 due to its lower carbon content. The lower carbon content helps to reduce the formation of chromium carbides, which can lead to sensitization and subsequent intergranular corrosion. AISI 304L is often preferred for welding applications to minimize the risk of intergranular corrosion.
 

Applications: AISI 304L stainless steel is commonly used in applications where welding is required, such as in the construction of tanks, piping systems, and equipment in the chemical, petrochemical, and food processing industries. AISI 304 stainless steel, on the other hand, is widely used in various applications, including kitchen appliances, architectural structures, and automotive components.
 

It's important to note that while AISI 304L offers improved weldability and resistance to sensitization, it may have slightly lower mechanical strength compared to AISI 304. The specific grade selection depends on the requirements of the application, considering factors such as corrosion resistance, weldability, and mechanical properties.
