The absolute roughness of hot rolled stainless steel round bars is higher than that of drawn bars. This is not a problem when rebar is only used for strength and corrosion resistance properties. But when the bar is used for aesthetic applications and outdoor fixtures, cold drawn stainless steel round bar is preferred because of its smooth surface and less absolute roughness. Having said that, all four types of stainless steel are required to meet the mechanical properties specified in this specification. The properties to be tested include not only the tensile and yield strength of the A479 bar, but also the elongation and hardness properties.

The combined strength of stainless steel bar tends to be inversely related to its corrosion resistance, so a good balance is important, be aware that the strongest stainless steel alloys available may not be suitable for 95% of applications and structural use in environments.
