Die Verbindung entsteht, indem zwei Flansche miteinander verschraubt und mit verschiedenen Dichtungen abgedichtet werden. Flansche bestehen normalerweise aus Aluminium, Bronze, Messing oder Kohlenstoffstahl. Das am meisten bevorzugte Material für allgemeine Flanschanwendungen ist geschmiedeter Kohlenstoffstahl. Darüber hinaus können Flansche innen mit unterschiedlichen Auskleidungsarten beschichtet werden. Normalerweise wird das Flanschmaterial als das gleiche Material wie das Rohrmaterial ausgewählt. Diese Materialauswahl wird durchgeführt, um möglichen Risiken durch galvanische Korrosion vorzubeugen. Die richtige Materialauswahl für Flansche wird gemäß den ASTM A-182-Standards entschieden.
